LATEST NEWS - WE HAVE JUST LEARNED THAT THERE ARE REPORTS FROM GAZA THAT DR. SARRAJ IS BEING BEATEN, HELD IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT, REFUSED LEGAL REPRESENTATION, AND UNDER SEVERE PRESSURE TO "CONFESS" TO DRUG SALES. THE ARARAT REGIME IS EVEN MORE BRUTAL, MORE CORRUPT, AND PROBABLY MORE STUPID IN VIEW OF THE RAMIFICATIONS THAT MAY FLOW FROM THIS SITUATION THAN HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN THOUGHT.

DR. EYAD SARRAJ ARRESTED AGAIN IN GAZA HUMAN RIGHTS OFFICES RANSACKED

ARAFAT'S UGLY REGIME ACTS TO INTIMIDATE ALL FROM SPEAKING UP

When Dr. Eyad Sarraj, a bold and articulate spokesman for human rights and legality, was arrested last month, MER headlined "ARAFAT'S BASTARD REGIME" and outlined the situation faced by Palestinians courageous enough to speak up against the police-state rule of Arafat. Though some thought so, this language was not too harsh a judgement, as subsequent events have confirmed. Indeed, the situation continues to get worse and worse in occupied Palestine. Arafat's regime is a hopeless cabal of self-seeking opportunist businessmen, collaborators, and thugs. It is a totally corrupt regime whose main accomplishment is the still- growing oppression and intimidation it inflicts on all who speak up and oppose Arafat's dictatorship. Torture is rampant, lawlessness is the rule rather than the exception, and corruption is nearly total with officials like Nabil Shaath pocketing huge sums for themselves, family members and friends. The Washington representative of this regime, Hassan Rahman, is among those who have stolen millions from the Palestinian people while representing them terribly. As Dr. Sarraj said last year in a speech that was broadcast on MER-TV, "YASSER ARAFAT AND THE P A HAS GIVEN ONLY SHAME TO THE PALESTINIANS".
Now, a few days ago, this obnoxious regime that has been foisted on the Palestinian people by the Israelis and the Americans (with the help of "client-regimes" in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Jordan) has struck again. After worldwide protest Dr. Sarraj was released earlier this month. He then held a press conference and made it known he intended to bring a law suit for illegal arrest
against senior officials of the "Palestinian Authority" and that he intended to continue speaking up against torture and for human rights. Earlier this week

Arafat plain-clothes secret police arrested Dr. Sarraj in his home and he has since been held in solitary confinement.
Unable to silence him any other way Arafat's goons then ransacked the offices of the Palestinian Independent Commission for Citizens Rights taking documents, tapes, and equipment and welding Dr. Sarraj's office shut. It is clear that Arafat and his "P A" want to intimidate all opponents and close down all independent institutions such as the Citizens Rights Commission which Sarraj
became head of after Hanan Ashrawi established it shortly after the Oslo agreement. Interestingly Ashrawi, once the well-known voice of the Palestinian negotiating team, has also become an outspoken critique of Arafat and his regime; even to the extent of voting against changing the PLO Charter at the recent rump Palestinian National Council meeting. After destroying the offices of the Citizens Rights Commission the Arafat regime is now claiming to have found a small amount of
marijuana in the offices of the organization and is preparing to convict Sarraj of selling drugs!
We reprint earlier information about Dr. Sarraj and the courageous statements he has made. And we urge everyone to order the two half-hour MER-TV programs and listen for themselves to Dr. Sarraj tell what the "Palestinian Authority" is really all about and how duplicitous the "peace process" is for the Palestinians.

Calling it a "police state" would be erroneous. There is no state, there is no freedom -- but there are "police" and thugs everywhere and still growing repression in the air. "We really screwed the Palestinians at Oslo"
Shimon Peres was overhead telling foreign diplomats some months ago, further bragging that now there would never be a real and independent Palestinian State.
Yasser Arafat -- at the behest of the Israelis and the Americans who now finance, arm and manipulate his regime at will -- rules over an assortment of scattered Palestinian reservations which he runs through intimidation, torture, and corruption. All those still supporting this bastard regime should be dismayed and ashamed.

"THERE IS AN OVERWHELMING SENSE OF FEAR. THE REGIME IS CORRUPT, DICTATORIAL, OPPRESSIVE... THERE ARE SO MANY ARBITRARY ARRESTS NOW,
WITHOUT CHARGE, WITHOUT REASON. THE AUTHORITY HAS NINE SECURITY ORGANIZATIONS, EACH WITH ITS OWN DETENTION CENTER. AND PEOPLE ARE
SYSTEMATICALLY TORTURED."

This is what Dr. Eyad Sarraj, a highly-educated and extremely thoughtful psychiatrist who heads the Palestinian Independent Commission for Citizens Rights in Gaza recently told visiting columnist Anthony Lewis. Earlier this month Lewis wrote a number of Op-Eds in the New York Times surprising critical of the so-called "peace process" -- and both Peres and Arafat were most displeased.
On Saturday Dr. Sarraj was arrested, suspected of "slander" says Arafat's "Attorney General," Khaled al-Qidra.

Dr. Eyad Sarraj, now the most prominent human rights advocate among the Palestinians, was arrested by the Arafat regime, the "Palestinian Authority", after speaking with the NEW YORK TIMES about the rampant lawlessness and torture going on in the "autonomous" areas, especially in Gaza. Dr. Sarraj was featured last year in two MER-TV programs. He strongly and vociferously
spoke up against the brutal and corrupt policies of the PA. Among the things he said:

"YASSER ARAFAT AND THE P A HAS GIVEN ONLY SHAME TO THE PALESTINIANS".

WE HAVE A "POLICE, DICTATORIAL STATE THAT HAS NO CONCEPT OF HUMAN RIGHTS."

Speaking about the corruption and incompetence of the P.A., Sarraj tells the following sad story: "IN THE LAST YEAR THE MINISTER OF HEALTH LEARNED ABOUT THE APPOINTMENT OF HIS DEPUTEES FROM THE NEWSPAPERS.
THEN FIVE DIRECTOR-GENERALS WERE APPOINTED IN THE HEALTH MINISTRY, EACH FROM A SEPARATE FACTION WITHIN FATAH. WHAT IS THE SAD THING IS THAT IN THE LAST YEAR THESE SENIOR PEOPLE NEVER HAD A SINGLE MEETING
BETWEEM THEM ON THE QUESTION OF HEALTH."

Dr. Sarraj, a well-respected Palestinian psychiatrist who succeeded Hanan Ashrawi as the head of the Palestinian Independent Commission for Citizens Rights, was quoted last month in the New York Times highly critical of the Arafat regime. As a result Sarraj was arrested by Arafat's police and confined in prison for more than a week. After much world-wide protest he was finally released.
According to Sarraj, he was "100 times freer" during Israel's direct occupation of Gaza to speak to the press then Palestinians are today under Arafat's regime.
The intent is very clear -- blatant and escalating intimidation and repression applied to everyone, including the well-known. Of course those who are well-known are not beaten and tortured -- neither by the Israelis nor the "Palestinian Authority" that now works with them. That treatment is
however widespread for those who are unknown as Dr. Sarraj has taken pains in the past few years to point out. To gain his own release Dr. Sarraj was "encouraged" to appologize for any "personal pain to the president (Arafat)" and to indicate that he would only "constructively criticize" the PA. It
remains to be seen how successful the tactics of repression will be. It is now thought there are nine competing secret police forces funded by Israel in the occupied and "autonomous" territories.
MER wants as many people as possible to be able to watch and show these videos in which Dr. Sarraj openly speaks up before his arrest -- he may be much more reluctant to speak up so openly and so forcefully in the future.
